Every night, your pillowcase collects oil, sweat, dead skin cells, and residue from hair and skincare products. If it’s not changed/washed regularly, it becomes a breeding ground for bacteria, which can then transfer onto your face and lead to clogged pores, irritation, and breakouts.

The type of fabric you sleep on can also make a difference. Rougher materials may cause friction, leading to increased irritation and even premature wrinkles.

How to Make Your Pillowcase Work for You

To reduce the risk of skin irritation and breakouts, follow these tips:

  • Wash or change your pillowcase at least twice a week to remove buildup that can clog pores.

  • Go for silk or satin, which cause less friction and help maintain your skin’s moisture balance. They’re also great for your hair!

  • Be mindful of hair products, as they can transfer onto your pillow and affect your skin.

  • Sleep on your back when possible, reducing prolonged contact between your face and your pillow.
